Spring in our step

Daffodil bulbs planted by HCRA volunteers are bursting into bloom.

This is the second year association members have planted bulbs under trees in our three roads with this year’s flowers paid for from HCRA funds.

The association is also working with local councillors and shops to get more new trees and flowers planted in our neighbourhood this year.

Street party survey

HCRA is planning a street party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Tuesday, June 5, and wants to hear your suggestions.

We have put together a quick online survey to help us gather feedback on the location and content of the event.

Please take the time to fill in the survey here or email comments and suggestions to chair@hcra.org.uk

HCRA’s Big Door Knock

Volunteers from Harrow Civic Residents’ Association will be calling on neighbours this weekend as part of our Big Door Knock.

We will visit all homes in Rosslyn Crescent, Frognal Avenue and Woodlands Road to tell people about the association and to invite everyone to a fun street party.

HCRA members will be doing the rounds on Saturday 11 and Sunday 10 and on the evening of Tuesday 13.

The Big Door Knock is a chance to introduce ourselves, recruit new members and raise awareness of events such as our annual “dump run” on April 21 and the street party on June 5.

We’re keen to hear you concerns about the local neighbourhood as well as your thoughts on our party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

We’ll be handing out a short questionnaire about the party, which will also soon be available to complete online on the Street Party page of this website.

If you have any comments or suggestions about the party in the meantime then please email chair@hcra.org.uk

Empty homes looted

Harrow has seen a surge in the number of empty homes being burgled, according to police.

Thieves have been breaking into empty properties and stripping them of copper piping and other items that can be sold on.

Police are asking residents to let them know about any empty homes in their area so they can keep an eye on them.

If you know of an empty house in the Greenhill ward then contact the Greenhill Safer Neighbourhoods Team on 020 8721 2780.

Burglary warning

Police are urging residents to take security precautions after a spate of burglaries in the Wealdstone area earlier this week.

There were nearly 20 burglaries in one two-day period with offences mainly taking place in the daytime or early evening.

It is believed that small groups of two to three men have been knocking on doors to check whether houses are occupied, later gaining access to properties from the back.

They usually arrive empty-handed and use bags and suitcases they find in homes to carry away items including jewellery, laptops, mobile phones and cash.

Food and dance festival

A day-long food and dance festival is coming to Harrow town centre on St Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 17.

The event, which runs from 11am to 5pm, will feature a farmers’ market, continental food stalls and cooking demonstrations – all taking place in St Ann’s Road.

Round the corner in St John’s Road, shoppers will be able to enjoy a colourful line-up of professional and community acts on an open air dance stage.

In honour of St Patrick’s Day, a troupe of Irish dancers will kick off the show.

Harrow Council says the event is part of efforts to revitalise the town centre and has been funded thanks to a grant from the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund.

Have your say on Harrow masterplan

Harrow residents are being urged to have their say on a masterplan for Harrow town centre, Wealdstone and Station Road.

The Harrow and Wealdstone Area Action Plan will guide the way these three areas – dubbed the “heart of Harrow” – are developed over the next few decades.

This will include the creation of new shops, businesses and homes, as well as changes to roads, pavements and cycle routes.

The plan promises a number of changes designed to improve the look of Station Road including improvements to shop fronts to create a new “urban boulevard”.

It also promises changes to the road and pavement layout to make life easier for pedestrians and cyclists. At the moment “conditions along the highway are often cramped and poorly laid out”, says the consultation document.

The changes could also include removing the cladding from the 1930s Safari cinema building to reveal its original Art Deco features.

The latest stage of public consultation on the plan runs until February 23 with a series of events throughout the month where people can ask questions and share their thoughts.

These include an event at Tesco in Station Road on Tuesday, February 14, from 2pm to 6pm. More information about the plan and how to have your say can be found here.

Annual General Meeting tonight

Harrow Civic Residents’ Association is staging its Annual General Meeting tonight.

All residents from Rosslyn Crescent, Woodlands Road and Frognal Avenue are invited to attend the meeting, which starts at 8.30pm.

The meeting – at an address in Rosslyn Crescent – will feature elections to the HCRA committee and reports of the previous year’s activities.

Tesco to build bigger store

Supermarket chain Tesco has gained planning permission to expand its store in Station Road.

Harrow Council’s planning committee approved plans to create a bigger Tesco Extra with a multi-storey car park and new shops and flats fronting Station Road at a meeting on January 18.

HCRA was among those who objected to the scheme because of the impact on traffic and the character of the area.

It was also feared a Tesco Extra, which will sell more items like TVs and fridges, could draw shoppers away from Harrow town centre.

As part of the plans, Tesco has promised to make improvements to the junction where Station Road meets Hindes Road and Woodlands Road.
